A Speed Bump Day
The other day I was trying to finish up a couple of things on the to do list and nothing was going right. Ever have one of those days? It went from bad to worse, nothing going right to everything going wrong. How did I go from just a speed bump in my day to feeling like I was climbing Mt. Everest?
When I really sit back and think about it, it’s that old voice popping up in my head and telling me “see you can’t do this”, “you are living in fantasy land”, “you are going to make a fool out of yourself”. Can anyone relate? For me, that voice comes from growing up in a family that basically took care of everything for me. Why would I try to do anything when my older siblings loved me so much they would just do it for me? Sounds good right? Not so much when it ends up becoming a negative voice that holds you back. For years I believed I would never do the things I dreamed of doing. Then one day another voice popped in my head that said, “wouldn’t it be cool if…?”. That was a game changer for me. Wouldn’t it be cool if, I could travel and be a part of empowering the next generation in a country thousands of miles away? That simple thought was the catalyst for me to take step of faith and do what I know deep in my heart I was created to do.
We all need a reminder on those days when a simple speed bump in life grows so large that all the self-doubt comes flooding back. Looking back at how stuck I used to be and where I am now gives me the courage to move forward and continue to be who I am today. We all need a reminder that we are good enough, smart enough, capable of doing what we know we can do. No fear, just faith, keeps us moving forward. Does the fear exist? Absolutely. This isn’t about ignoring your fear, it’s about remembering what put that fear in your head in the first place and calling it out. Telling fear, that limiting belief to take a hike.
Maybe that seems over simplified. Maybe you don’t even know if you can take that first step of faith. It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it. I’m not here to tell you to “get over it”, I know doesn’t work. I am here to tell you, you can do what’s on your heart. When the negative thoughts pop in your head, you can still do what’s on your heart. I don’t do this walk along, I have a few trust worthy friends that encourage and walk with me. Who’s walking with you? Who is there to encourage you? Maybe that’s your first step. Wouldn’t it be cool if you had a group of trust worthy friends who clearly saw you and everything you are becoming? These types friends will pick you up and cheer you on when you stumble. They are the positive voice you need to keep the faith.
